After serving 13 years of a 15-year-to-life sentence for a murder he committed in 1993, former Bad Boy Records rapper G. Dep was released from prison on April 4, 2024. Now a free man, he is eager to rebuild his life and rekindle his music career.

G. Dep, whose real name is Trevell Coleman, was granted clemency by New York Governor Kathy Hochul in December 2023. His release was supported by the attorney who prosecuted him and the judge who presided over his case, as well as many in the music community who believed he deserved a second chance.

During his time in prison, G. Dep earned an associate’s degree and wrote nearly 400 songs. He emerged from prison with a renewed focus on his music and a desire to make amends for his past.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity to rebuild my life,” G. Dep said in a statement upon his release. “I want to use my music to inspire others who are going through difficult times. I’ve learned from my mistakes and I’m determined to make a positive contribution to society.”
